This week at SoLo we had a chat with Cameron from Ernest & Cooper about the ideas and process behind his handcrafted custom furniture and bespoke home accessories. You can find a selection of Ernest & Cooper pieces in the SoLo Pop-Up Shop until the end of July. If you’re on the lookout for a Father’s Day gift for the dad who loves to cook, these handmade maple wood and resin charcuterie boards are perfect!
What’s the story behind your business?
My business was Inspired by my grandpa Ernest (who was a carpenter and ship builder) and coming from Canada my love for creating with wood was in my blood. That early introduction into woodworking really propelled me on this journey to inspire my children Freya and Cooper. Thus Ernest & Cooper Woodworks Co. was born.
What does your creative process look like?
My creative process starts out with ideas I have in my mind and also inspiration from all the other amazing woodworkers and makers all over the world. Social media is such an amazing tool to connect with other likeminded makers from every corner of the globe. I create everything on my own in my home wood workshop that I built on my property in 2015.
What advice would you give to other makers looking to start selling their work?
Any tips for other makers I would say is just go for it! Get stuck in and don’t be afraid to make mistakes. Everything is a learning process and no mistakes are a negative as you can always take a positive from everything. That and make sure to support and champion fellow independent makers and brands. Being part of the maker community is one of the greatest parts of running a small business.
